After Donovan is banished from Elizabeth's home by her nasty step-papa, he doesn't just skulk away and sulk. Nope, he dons a mask and plays the part of the disfigured, tortured Count Rochembeau, a refugee from the Terror in France. His scheme works because that's just what the stepfather wants--an evil, frightening bridegroom for Elizabeth (he's just wicked, that stepfather). Donovan is willing to do anything to claim girl he loves, using even deception when necessary.
When Elizabeth is kidnapped, Donovan reverts back into pirate mode and hunts down the culprits who kidnapped his bride. It's not pretty when he captures their ship. No one is left alive. This is the brawny, tough guy part of the Alpha Male equation. And that's the part that gets the blood pumping in our veins as women, right? There is the warrior element that makes us swoon and sigh.
Yeah, but . . . there is another side that must be present: the tender, gentle, patient lover. Donovan is not a brute or a bully. He's been tortured. He's been in prison. He's been in a dark, ugly place where fear abounds. Therefore, he's able to help Elizabeth through her pain. He's able to bring her back from the dark side. He's been there, so he knows the way back. He's strong, tough, smart, and oh so tender!

Had to backtrack and re-read your hero's description -- a pirate and a scientist -- very interesting combination. ^_^

Great post. One of my favorite alpha males is Rourk from J.D. Robb's In Death Series. :-)
One of my most favorite heroes is Simon DeMontfort in The Dragon and the Jewel by Virginia Henley. My second favorite would be James Mallory in Johanna Lindsay's Mallory books.
Wonderful post, Lily! Made me want to pick up a great romance and start reading. :)
Great post, Lily. Yes Donovan is a definite Alpha hero. I to love my alphas. they need to be strong and take charge but have a true heart beating beneath their tough exterior. Two of my fav alpha are Brodrick from Ransom and James Malory from The Gentle Rogue.

I have to agree on James Malory. love the whole series
Thanks Brittiany, Rhonda, Tin and Christina, You've given me so new titles to check out. That's the idea, let's share our fav alpha romance heroes, Ladies and Gents. I'm lovin it.
Yes, Brittiany, I'm definitely checking out the Virginia Henely book. Another great writer of Alpha males is Marsh Canham. I'm loving her book Pale Moon Rider right now. :)
I love Alphas, because I need someone as confident and dominant as me to be an equal in our relationship - I hate the feeling as if partner is less powerful than me and cannot make it without me.
My favourite Alpha male is Gabriel from Annette Curtis Klause's Blood and Chocolate, because he's strong, confident and willing to fight for what he wants. It's an exciting, extremely well-written book that leaves you longing for that world.

So many Alpha's-- but I have a special place for Zach from Pamela Clare's Breaking Point.. Also LOVE Damien from Nobody's Perfect from Kallypso Masters. He such a strong, but wounded hero!
modularmates(at)comcast(dot)net
My favourite alpha, a very sneaky subtle one, is Lymond from the Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett. He's a clever and manipultive seducer of both male and female while keeping his heart to himself, but once he has taken responsibility for someone they are assured of his complete loyalty. Although most of his 'alphadom' is expressed through his intellect he is absolutely deadly - the consummate warrior. The romance element is intense but leavened with enough military and political mayhem to make it palatable for MM readers too. Highly recommended.
I like Roarke from Nora ROberts books :)
Thanks for the hoppin fun !

My favorite romance book hero is Adam Hauptman from the Mercy Thompson series. Even though Mercy and Adam were actually a "thing" he is always there for her waiting patiently for her to discover their love.

Why I love Alpha Males is no real surprise! The perfect Alpha Male for me could be a Vampire, a Scottish Laird, an English Rogue/Gentleman, a Werewolf or Shape-shifter, or a Knight. He’s the rogue who thinks he can’t be reformed into a gentleman. He’s the rough and scarred Scottish laird that has a heart of gold. He’s the werewolf or shape-shifter that needs to heal an aching heart because it took him years to find his true mate. He’s the vampire who has waited decades for that special someone’s blood to sing to him and wake him up. And he’s the knight who can defeat the enemy with a quick swing of his sword, but can’t see the love in front of his face. My Alpha Male has eyes that can see into your soul and are as blue as the sea, or as black as a storm. He’s tall and brooding. His heart can enfold you into its grasp and make you fall in love when he gives it to you freely and completely. He is protective and passionate. In the end he is the one that makes your heart jump and butterflies fly in your stomach, and still kiss you until your legs melt!

Rourke from the In Death series is one of my favorite heroes. I like him because he's got the traits I love about alphas but he's not over-the-top.
By the way, I love your prize. A book and coffee? It's like heaven. :)

My favorite Alpha Male is Xavier (from my Existence series). I am also quite partial to Dr. Gregory House (of the tv show House M.D.), Sheriff Carter (of the tv show Eureka), and Chief (from "The Laughing Man" in JD Salinger's Nine Stories).
But for a more romance-book-like character, Noah Clayborne from Julie Garwood's "Shadow Dance" appeals to me as an Alpha because he is strong, intelligent, and has just the right amount of arrogance.

I love an alpha man! One of the first I ever read was Jamie from Diana Gabaldon's The Outlander. I still love that man..even though I found my own kilted man.

Alpha males are the best….strong, independent, fiercely protective, but on the inside they are nothing but a big ol’ teddy bear! I love the way their mouths talk filthy, but their eyes portray their sensitive sweet. They can be rough and tough in the bedroom, but still have the gentle caress of an attentive and protective lover. It's all in the heart.....alpha males are the best!
Jack Gordon from Liz Crowe's REALTOR series rocks!
Thanks for participating in the hop!

An Alpha can be protective, loving, caring, gentle and considerate to his partner but he also can be the most fearsome and aggressive if threatened. He will protect his loved ones to the death. Thanks for the HOP!

"He's a former pirate, a scientist and an actor who uses his wit..."

I Love that they are strong, loyal, confident, and how protective they are of their woman even when they KNOW she can kick some major ass.

Alphas are the best.. make them big, tall, dark and handsome, with charisma, intelligence, assertiveness, passion and protectiveness and I'll be in heaven :]

My favorite alpha is Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diary Series. I love that he is a tortured soul and while he has a kind heart, he does whatever he can to hide it except to the woman he loves. His sense of humor is right up my alley! The fact that it is a brother triangle doesn't hurt things either! If only he could once and for all win the girl! Thanks so much for being a part of this hop. I am enjoying discovering new authors and adding lots of books to my wish list!
Best wishes,
Marlena
